Encountering the Wild Horses of Sable Island in NYC

Have you ever heard of the wild horses of Sable Island, a small, windswept island off the coast of Nova Scotia?

Thanks to the incredible photographs of Roberto Dutesco, you can encounter these magnificent creatures right in the heart of Manhattan! The Wild Horses of Sable Island® gallery in New York City offers visitors a chance to discover these stunning horses and the untamed beauty of Sable Island itself.

Recognized as one of the fifty must-see places in New York by Art Architecture Design and visited by celebrities like actor Ryan Reynolds, Dutesco’s exhibition is sure to captivate you!

Dutesco’s Inspiring Journey

Born in Romania and raised in Canada, Dutesco began his career as a fashion photographer. However, after watching a documentary about Sable Island, his path took a surprising new direction! He became fascinated by this fragile ecosystem and its unique horses, descendants of European horses brought to the island in the 16th century.

After several attempts, Dutesco was granted permission to visit Sable Island, a place almost entirely off-limits to human visitors. During his time on the island, he managed to earn the trust of these isolated horses, which was key to realizing the authentic photographs he’s known for today.

As Dutesco explains, “respect is the key to any ecosystem, not just on Sable Island, but in every encounter. If I know nothing about them and they know nothing about me, there must be a mutual respect between us.”

By immersing himself in their natural habitat, Dutesco was able to capture the grace and power of these animals, immortalizing his experience in a series of photographs now on display in his New York gallery.

Wild Horses in Manhattan

Located at 315 Hudson Street, near SoHo, Dutesco’s gallery tells the inspiring story of the horses of Sable Island.

Through his art, Dutesco highlights not only the beauty of these magnificent creatures, but their very emotions.

As you wander through the large-format photographs, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to Sable Island, witnessing the camaraderie, compassion, and vulnerability that these horses share.

As a horse lover myself, I was deeply moved by this exhibition. It offers not only an appreciation of the beauty of these animals but also sparks important conversations about their conservation.

A Mission of Conservation

Inspired by his work with the horses of Sable Island, Dutesco founded IAMWILD, an organization dedicated to promoting the conservation and protection of nature.

“Wild horses, in particular, simply exist on this small island, just as we exist on this small planet in the vastness of the universe,” he explained to me. It’s this idea of contributing to something greater than ourselves that drives the mission of IAMWILD.

Thanks in part to Roberto Dutesco’s efforts, Sable Island is now recognized as Canada’s 43rd National Park, and its horses are specially protected by the Canadian government. Though Dutesco is now focused on other projects through his foundation, the horses of Sable Island will always be at the heart of his mission.
